Alex Kustov: "All hand built models are flawed, but that what makes them unique."

I first visited Italianhorses.net 5 years ago, when I started my modeling and I thought: yeah, I wanna build same amazing cars in future! Plenty of Ferraris, so clean, with perfect surface, lot of nice details and so many useful tips. And this is reason why my first interview on modelcarsbeasts.com is with Alex Kustov, modeller and author of Italianhorses.net.

Hi Alex, how old are you and where are you from? I'm almost getting to the age where playing with toy cars can be considered weird! Turned 39. Originally from Russia, been living in US for the past 20 years.

How long do you build cars? Started in 1999, but had exposure to modeling planes and armor when I was a kid.

And how did it begin? Just passing by hobby store, decided to stop by and take a look. Browsing through isles saw Revall kit or Acura NSX. Really liked the real car so I bought the kit. The rest is history.

Do you build kits in present?  No, not for the past few years.

Why? I was involved in a serious car accident few years ago and injured my hand. Lost some movement so can't build anymore.

Its a pity… Whats your hobby now? I'm still hoping that one day I will be able to come back to model building so I have not given up. I'm still buying kits! But for now, I switched to collecting diecast in 1/43 and 1/18 scale. Not as satisfying as building my own, but also a great hobby.

"I was involved in a serious car accident. Lost some movement so can't build anymore."

Do you have any plans with Italianhorses.net? Not sure, it has been a while since I had anything worth putting on the website. The plan is to keep it in the current state for as long as I can pay for the server costs, but that might change as well.

… by the way, I sent some smaller amount through donate button on your website, because I wish to preserve this website and tips in future. Anyway, what type of cars do you like? All kinds, sports cars the most. Prefer road cars to race.

… and of course, Ferraris. Do you believe in perfect model? Not sure I fully understand the question - perfect in what sense? Technically, all hand built models are flawed, but that what makes them unique.

You are right, but any imperfection on my builds makes me angry:-). Do you like modellers contests? Not a big fan, but I have been to a few. Participated in several in early 2000's, won few trophies. It's fun in the beginning.

"How much unbuild kits I have? Too many! Few hundred for sure."

How much models do you build per year? Is it important for you? Depends. When I was building high detail customer builds it would sometime take couple of years to finish a model. But I never work on just one project. Box stock build take from a week to a month time.

What would you recommend for beginners? Patience. Don't rush. Don't try to do too much on one model. Grow a builder gradually.

Where do you look for inspiration? What are your favorites websites or modellers? I really don't have any modeling websites I regularly visit. I've been out of the hobby for a long time.

Do you have any dreams in modeling? Any non release kit? Would love to build a Pagani Zonda and BMW e34 m5.

Yes, Zonda, my most favorite car! Producers, please ;-). How much kits (unbuild) do you have? Too many! Few hundred for sure. Mostly ferraris.

And whats your favorites finished build or builds? Probably 64 250 gto from Hiro. What a kit. 250GT Lusso was a great build, too.

What are strongest trends in future? Like I have already mentioned, I've been away from model building for too long to be able to accurately answer this. It looks that video games and social media are replacing hobbies that you need to do with your hands. Hopefully manufacturers will continue to make new subjects for new modelers.

Alex, I also hope. Thanks for your time and thanks for Italianhorses.net!
